The 2026 theme, “Achieving Health Excellence through Person-Centred Care,” embodies a forward-looking commitment to elevate healthcare standards by integrating clinical excellence with empathy, respect, and meaningful patient engagement — ensuring that progress in medicine remains grounded in humanity.
Professor Namal Wijesinghe
President 2026
Ceylon College of Physicians
It is both an honour and a privilege to be the President of the Ceylon College of Physicians. I am deeply grateful to the Fellows and Members of the College for the confidence they have placed in me. The College has long stood as a cornerstone of professional excellence, academic leadership, and clinical advancement in Sri Lanka, and it is a responsibility I accept with great humility and commitment.
The theme for this year, “Achieving Health Excellence through Person-Centred Care,” reflects a fundamental principle that should guide modern medical practice. While scientific and technological advancements continue to transform healthcare, it is essential that we maintain a strong focus on the individual patient — recognising their values, circumstances, and preferences as central to clinical decision-making. Delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care requires not only clinical expertise but also meaningful engagement with patients and their families.
As physicians, we face an evolving healthcare landscape shaped by the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, emerging health challenges, and increasing demands on healthcare systems. Strengthening person-centred approaches, improving quality of care, and promoting multidisciplinary collaboration will remain key priorities during my tenure. The College will continue to enhance opportunities for continuing professional development, encourage research addressing local health priorities, and foster strong academic and professional partnerships both locally and internationally.
Supporting trainees and early-career physicians is another vital responsibility of the College. Investing in their development ensures the continued growth, resilience, and leadership of our profession in the years ahead.
I look forward to working closely with the Council, our membership, our sister colleges and health administrators and policy makers of the country to further strengthen the role of the Ceylon College of Physicians. Together, we can continue to uphold the proud traditions of the College while advancing healthcare excellence and improving the wellbeing of the community we serve.
